Helping Adults Remain Independent

Senior Companions touch the lives of adults who need extra assistance to live independently in their own homes or communities. They serve frail older adults, adults with disabilities, those with terminal illnesses, and offer respite for caregivers. They assist their adult clients in basic but essential ways:

  • Offering companionship and friendship to isolated and frail adults
  • Assisting with simple chores
  • Adding richness to their clients' lives

Eligibility: To become a Senior Companion volunteers must:

  • Be 55 or over,
  • Be able to serve between 15 and 20 hours per week; and
  • Have an individual annual income of less than $22,000.

Benefits: Senior Companions make connections with other adults and know they are making significant contributions to their lives. In addition, they receive the following:

  • Tax-free stipend averaging $220 per month. It is not income and cannot be used to calculate eligibility for federal and state entitlements like Social Security, SSI, MediCare, MediCal, HUD housing, etc.;
  • Monthly training session including all-you-can-eat lunch;
  • Reimbursement for transportation – mileage or bus pass;
  • A hot meal each day at the work site or a cash lunch subsidy;
  • Paid vacation and sick leave;
  • Accident and liability insurance while on duty; and
  • Annual Recognition Luncheon and Gifts.
