Project SCOUT Free Tax Prep Update June 2020


Project SCOUT continues its commitment to provide the Santa Cruz County community with free tax prep for those who qualify. Due to COVID-19, we are not doing any direct services but are offering the following:

1) Tax prep online: email to start the process:

2) Tax drop offs by
APPOINTMENT ONLY at one of our offices in Aptos or Watsonville.

Call Project SCOUT at (831) 724-2606 or (831) 318-1014 to arrange drop off.


To receive tax prep services, you will need to do the following:

Fill out INTAKE SHEET; so we know what you need to declare in your taxes.

Provide your Social Security Card or your SSA-1099 form, if receiving Social Security Income.

Provide your Driver’s License or ID that is valid and that has your picture on it.

All of your employment income W-2s, 1099s, etc…

All 1099s reporting income other than wages, salaries, and tips.

Payments or other contributions you have made that may be deductible from your taxable income 1098s.

-Forms that report your health insurance coverage 1095s.

Breakdown of donations to charity and to whom, and the amounts or the value of items donated.

Project SCOUT (Senior Citizen OUTreach)


Project SCOUT provides free tax assistance to seniors, individuals with a disability, low-income families and individuals in Santa Cruz County. Project SCOUT also assists with general tax questions. Project SCOUT began its operations in 1968 as an independent non-profit organization. We have a corps of volunteers who assist the community with their tax-related needs during tax season. We’re also available to help on a limited basis through the full year.

Income Tax Assistance


Project SCOUT offers volunteer income tax assistance and tax counseling for local residents during tax season (from February 1st to April 15th) at sites throughout Santa Cruz County. Our volunteers are trained by Internal Revenue Service and Franchise Tax Board personnel to assist older adults, people with disabilities, and low-income families and individuals to prepare their tax returns. For disabled individuals unable to get to our tax sites, we have trained volunteers who will in-home tax preparation. We also provide help on an appointment basis after tax season for those who qualify.

Who Can Receive Services?

Anyone over the age of 60, those with a disability, low-income families and individuals are eligible to receive SCOUT’s Tax Assistance programs. Donations are gladly accepted.

Project SCOUT operates throughout Santa Cruz County. The Project SCOUT office is located inside the Watsonville Senior Center.
